International Science Fair Winners

May 20, 2002
Four of the top award winners from BASEF 2002 joined ten other students as part of YSF Team Canada at the 2002 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Louisville, Kentucky. Eva Vertes, of Dundas, won "Best in Category" for her project in the Medicine and Health category, along with other awards. Colin O'Flynn, of Hamilton, won an Artificial Intelligence Society Special Award of US$1000 for his Engineering project

National Science Fair Winners

May 20, 2002
Sixteen students with twelve projects went on to represent the Bay area at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Saskatoon, Saskatewan. Eight projects won awards, including a divisional gold medal for Anthony Chiarelli for his project Steganography: You Can Look, but You Can't See.

BASEF 2002 Winners

Over 300 students with more than 200 science projects, 150 judges and countless volunteers saw the culmination of months of work as the 42nd Annual Bay Area Science & Engineering Fair took place from April 3 to 6, 2002 at Mohawk College.

We congratulate all of our participants for their hard work and enthusiasm; judges, guests and organizers were all impressed with what they saw.

About our New Name

Some of you may be wondering what happened to the "Hamilton District Science and Engineering Fair" or the "Hamilton-Wentworth & Halton Science and Engineering Fair"; the BASEF is still the same organization serving the same towns and cities around the bay, along and below the Niagara Escarpment, from Stoney Creek around to Oakville. Rather than changing the name of the fair with each change in municipal or regional nomenclature, we've named the fair after the bay, call it Burlington Bay or Hamilton Bay, from around which all of our students, teachers and volunteers are drawn. We don't think that the Bay is going anywhere, so our name shouldn't be changing again any time soon (but if we're wrong, then someone might have a fantastic topic for an environmental science project).
